Family Pattern

It was through an exhibition that I first visited Pontianak, Susan’s hometown in Indonesia. Little remained there tied to her past—save for a visit to her grandmother’s grave. Our relative, who guided us, could no longer read Chinese. We relied on photographs on a phone, matching the unique motifs etched into each tombstone to identify where her great-grandmother lay.
For Indonesian Chinese families, what remains of “Chineseness” may now exist only as visual symbols: in their features, or in the familial textures specific to their lineage. I reconstructed the ornamental patterns from my great-grandmother’s grave using varied clays—much like how each of us reinterprets the fragments of our shared history.
