Three Choice

When Susan arrived in Hong Kong, the matchmaker offered her three choices: a painter who could no longer lower his head, a hunchbacked man, or a former fisherman. Having read about Hong Kong’s history as a fishing village, she assumed fishermen were prosperous—a romanticized narrative that led her to select the fisherman. She soon learned, however, that fishermen were among the marginalized, their status eroded by the city’s rapid transformation.
This dissonance—between mythologized histories and the realities of displacement—echoes the fragile illusions that shape migrant aspirations. Susan’s choice, rooted in misread cultural symbols, mirrors the collisions of identity and belonging I explore in my work.
