As a child, I often found myself at Kai Tak Airport—waiting hours to send off or welcome relatives, wandering its halls to pass the time.
Outside one restaurant stood an enormous wedding cake, and I said to Susan I would marry there when I grew up.
On Kai Tak’s final day, Susan took me to photograph the planes one last time. We said goodbye to the grand cake, and with it, my romanticized ideals of marriage and Hong Kong.
Baoxianghua (寶相花)—a recurring motif in porcelain—is a flower that exists only in imagination. Crafted by Chinese artisans, it weaves together symbols of auspicious blooms into a single, unreal blossom: a floral tapestry of collective longing.
